    Council Tax.

Here in Scotland, council tax has suddenly jumped to the front of all manifestos in the parties' attempts to win the pensioner vote.

But, where were the concerns of the Lab/Lib group, not to mention the opposition parties, over the last eight years.

At present, I pay 12% of my annual income, whereas others in exactly the same house pay just 6%. As there are two, three, four and five people in them, my demand on services is up to one fifth of theirs.

Of course, I am fully aware council tax is a necessary part of paying for services, but the basis for working out the payment must be examined, and the value of the house, (market value), that has been paid for with taxed income, should not be part of it.

We all get just one bin collection, one police force, the same roads and water. To be fair, everyone has to pay something, and this includes those on benefits.

The only system that may be fair to all is a fixed percentage of annual income.

  • I agree %100%%%%

  • Me too. The whole situation is farcical.

Now they want to come in and inspect our homes. Those who have worked hard, saved and put time, effort and hard-earned cash into improving their homes will pay more tax. My sister works as an NHS cleaner and struggled to buy a council house in a deprived area, which she has gutted out and done up, doing all the work herself. She will, if this daft plan goes ahead, pay more tax than her drug-dealing neighbours who are content to live in squalor.

We are told that those who refuse admittance to the inspectors will be fined and/or jailed. People like my sister and elderly parents are terrified of the consequences if they do not comply, despite my argument that if everyone stands together and refuses the authorities do not have the resources to pursue more than a minority of transgressors. Eventually, as with the Poll Tax fiasco, they will have to do a U-turn.

I will soon be living on a narrowboat. Will I be taxed into oblivion because I have a "nice view" of the canal?

I've recently returned from Australia where taxes are a fraction of what we pay in the UK, but services provided appear to be infinitely better. Most consumables are half the price too. Wages appear to be about the same. Welcome back to 'rip off Britain'!

  • Hi sally, you have hit the nail on the head there, to save money we must all let our houses deteriorate until the whole of Britain become one giant East Berlin, (that was ).

We are looking for ideas, How do they raise the tax in Australia?.

  • Good question. I will ask my uncle in Perth. He's been there since he went out as a Ten Pound Pom in the '60s, so he should know.
