I BELIEVE.
I believe for every drop of rain that falls
a flower grows.
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night
a candle glows.
I believe for everyone that goes astray
someone will come
to show the way
I believe, I believe.
I believe above the storm the smallest prayer
will still be heard,
I believe that someone in the great somewhere
hears every word,
Every time I hear a new born baby cry
or touch a leaf
or see the sky
Then I know why
I believe.
It must have been about 1950 when I first heard this song, at that time all I knew was that it was an American man singing and you only seemed to hear it played on Radio Luxembourg, and that was the only place on the radio that you could hear new music.
I say hear it but it was more like hear some of it. Reception was, lets say, dodgy, and I lived on the South coast that to my mind was just about as close as you could get to Luxembourg if you were in the U.K.. To this day I don't really know if it actually came from Luxembourg.
Anyway, back to the song, it probably the first time that I felt the hairs on the back of my neck lift, the voice, of course, Frankie Laine, was so deep in the feeling that came across.
I sang that song continually for weeks and weeks, until my parents shouted, "For God's sake", or words to that effect.
It was several years later, in a short spell where I almost made a living out of singing, that I realised the significance of the words, they are beautiful.
