Let's debate God.

by joebangles @ 27/11/2007 - 15:29:48

There is no way that I can accept that this world was created in six days, I can believe that it happened naturally if each “day” is counted as, say, 10 million years, that is, that our planet took 60 million years to develop into a place where life could begin, and that the theory of evolution is correct, but, evolution takes a million years to make just minor changes and we with our limited knowledge and lack of scientific proof will not notice these changes.

So why God? Simple explanation for simple minds in the past because no other theory was available?

We are not that simple today, scientists can provide proof for many things, proof gives us faith.

I have no doubts that someone, possibly named Jesus, lived about 2000 years ago, I have no doubts that he was a clever and good man, seeing the way in which the people were being treated, the crimes that were committed, the general way of life, this Jesus spoke up, created rules for living a way of life that was for the good of those people, spoke the wishes of the people, against the wishes of the ruling classes, and was readily accepted by the people. He created simple ways of explaining to simple people, his story’s spread by word of mouth, with a little added or lost at each exchange.

His rules, in his book, are an example of how we should all live our lives, that is why God should always exist.

But, why do so many people today have faith in God?

I am not sure if I have written exactly what is on my mind, I am not really sure of anything about faith or belief, I'm not sure if I have written anything that may start a debate, but comments would be appreciated.

I think anyone who says nowadays that there is such a thing as a god has been fooled by somebody. Tracing it back, there must have been a first person to invent this silly concept, probably as a way to frighten their teenagers into good behaviour. Whoever that was, they deserve the non-existent hell, but have got away with it by ceasing to exist.

but to look at another way...if the world were to get proof...god appeared and proved to everyone that indeed he did exist...and everyone believed it....and that everything was true...heaven.....yes heaven ..that it was the place you went and that it was the next life where everything was better and you again met all those that had past...those loved ones....if you believed that 1005 well why would you bloody well stay on earth people would be dropping like flies....

some say that you have to have faith without proof so that the world remains stable.....just a point of view to throw in the pot..:)

It is not what you believe in that is important. It is that you believe in something. There can be no earthly name for The Great Creator. Such a name would bring him\her down to our level of understanding, therefore rendering the whole concept of creation in whatever form to a simple, why are we hell bent on giving everything a label and a folder to stick it on?

I agree with spiritbird.

It's the belief system. I think given life and all it's ups and downs, you need a faith, a reason for life and an understanding.

I believe in a superior being, god, whatever. I believe out lives are a journey, with lessons to learn, but with choice. Meaning people stray from the path. When we get to the end of this life our spirit lives on, and if needed is reborn....

Yes Science has challenged many conventional beliefs, yet it cnt prove there is no God jst as it cnt prove that there is a God. It is up to the individual how they choose to view the world around them.

I cnt imagine a world in which there was no God, this would pose a number of tricky questions...

1) How did we come to be on earth?
2) For what reason are we living?
3) Do we get to do as we please in this life and get no reward/punishment?
4) Is death the end of everything?

I believe in God because it makes sense to me and it gives me comfort to believe that there is no real purpose to human life.

In general though nowadays its not v. cool to believe in God but I think religion will be here til the end of time.

my thoughts! :)

I don't believe in God, but I do believe in faith; faith in what? Well faith in all kinds of things, but no one superior being that's for sure.

I'm with Usky and Trevor on this. I don't see how the whole theory of evolution can be discounted. Sure if believing in a 'God' makes you feel special or more loved then why not? But to me I do things for me, my faith is (usually) in me and my family, my friends nd the wider world.

Nothing has to have a reason, it just is.

"Do we get to do as we please in this life and get no reward/punishment?" from Badger.

Well, yes to a degree we can do as we please, the reward is how you choose to live your life, the punishment, generally meted out by society and (in)justice systems the world over. My reward - having family and friends that care about me, my health and a roof over my head, also being able to speak/type/think freely, be educated as much as I want. Isnt this enough reward for one?
Punishment? Why would I need one?

I'm with Terry Pratchett on this one, who said that whilst atheism has it's place, it's not so easy to say "Oh outmoded form of belief on a crutch" when you hit your finger with a hammer!

I'm an agnostic, I believe there is no God.
An atheist doesn't believe in God.
There's a subtle difference.
I can't see how anyone can believe in a mythical higher being when there is absolutely no proof whatsoever for such a thing to exist.
I mean, come on!

At least up until about 25 years ago there was a 'flat earth society' in Britain , made up of members who refused to believe that the earth is spherical .
