Only the third day, hard going.

by joebangles @ 03/01/2008 - 20:57:59

Just three days in to the new year and the only resolution that I made was so nearly broken this morning.

My nearest shop for the daily newspaper is about half ( Why isn't there a key for "half" on the computer key board?), is about half a mile from my house, a nice wee stroll if I don't require anything else, in this shop there is an assistant, bitter faced, grey complexion, red/maroon hair, possibly in her fifty's, I say "good morning", she says nothing, I say "thank you", at the end of the transaction, she says nothing.

My new year resolution was, I will never say thank you to her.

This morning I got as far as "tha", before I closed my mouth, I am finding it very hard not to be polite, the question is, How can she do it all the time?

Stay polite, it costs nothing and one day she just might say something back. Who knows what troubles she has been through to make her the way she is?

Yes Sal, something in what you say but as my parents told me, "politeness costs you nothing", it might even cheer her up.

I would agree with the above, keep being polite!

by the way 1/2 is ok!

Yes Teri, 1/2 is O K, but a key with for it would be better, we, at least my keyboard, has [ and ], and, { and }, don't need them both specially as you can use ( and ), likewise, | and l and 1, I have no idea what ¬ is.

Still, I failed English, so what do I know!

It's funny reading your post..it reminded me of a man and a woman who would cycle by us slowly very frequently and we tried smiling and nothing, then we saw them walking and tried again and nothing then months later we said 'good morning' and smiled and got a smile and 'a good morning' back! And, now whenever we see them, it's always a cheery smile so hang in there, Trev, persistence does sometimes pay off...she may have troubles and just not feel up to being cheery...I know a smile is free but even that can be hard work if you're actually really darned miserable...big hugs...:)

I smile and say good morning to people in the streets near my house. Most people look at me in an odd (Oh my, she's talking to me? Do i know her? Freak) kinda way but occasionally I'll get a smile and a 'morning' back. Strangely it seems to be more prevalent in people walking dogs (sometimes) and people over 65. Strange innit how use of manners change over time. As a kid you'd always please thank you and hello goodbye but now?
