Double Glazing. How much?

by joebangles @ 04/03/2008 - 00:05:26

I could certainly do with a bit of help here.

Today I had a visit from the double glazing salesman. Yes, I do need new windows, I'm well aware of that.

"Come in" I said, " I want the best price that you can give me for replacing the five large windows and the three small windows that are in the hall and landing".

He eventually got around to quoting a price of £14.900, "Forget it and goodbye" I say.

"Ah, but" he said, "With this discount and that discount I can get it down to £9.700".

"Far too much" I say. "Well how much do you want to pay" he says.

I have told him to 'phone me at ten on Wednesday morning when I will tell him how much I am prepared to pay, so, Could anyone give me some guidance here?

I would appreciate it.

What an odd way to conduct business! Why didn't he just start with the figure of 9.7K? Did he think you'd say "yes, please" when he said 14.9K? I've seen expose progs on tv about this kind of thing. RE: the price... say you'd like another 10, 15 or 20% off the figure of 9.7K if he can manage it!

I mean, don't say 10, 15 or 20... you have to decide which %age to ask him for and stick to that!

Thanks Znethru, rather hoping someone has experience of dealing with or as an agent for double glazing.

You are unlikely to find that kind of person very easily, Trevor! I think I have given you something to think about... it gives the guy a chance to make you "one final offer" and still save face. Another thing to keep in mind (or stick to...) is a figure above which you will not go!

Where did you find him? LOL...I'd avoid him because if he's that bad a business man, have you any guarantee he'll do a good job on your windows...in any case, you should always get several quotes before deciding....big hugs...and good luck..:))

Thanks Jen, it's a nationwide company that I wont name yet, I am well aware of how they work and told him before he did it that he would be 'phoning his manager next to "see what they could give him permission to offer me".

I always get three quotes at least on anything over £100.

Try some different companies and then try playing them off against each other. That's what I do. They expect it.

Decide what you want to pay. STICK TO IT. Then get as many quotes as possible until you get YOUR price. This is the low season for these companies and they will fight for your custom. If they start by giving the old 'discount' story they are desperate for the business. Take it from an old 'salesman.

Thanks Ed, the manager 'phoned me with his special offer this morning, I asked, "Is this the very best that you can do?" he said yes, I said, " Too much, sorry to have wasted your time" and put the 'phone down.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

I've had a lot of experience with these D/G people over the years with the different houses i've lived in. Even Everest pestered me over the phone after a home visit because I laughed at their excesive quote to have UPVC facias, soffits etc. ( quote was more expensive than the cost to have a whole house done with windows, doors etc.) Eventually after a few weeks they brought the cost down to a third of the original quote. They will ALL try it on ( no exceptions). Always say no and let them grovel back to you. they will ALWAYS get back to you with a much cheaper quote. I've been told Europlas are very good, but at present cannot find any feedback on them good or bad ( except good feedback on their own website of course). Good luck.

Thanks for your comment dogman, they have now given up calling me, they told me that I was a pest. Europlas does not ring any bells with me up here in Scotland but will now ask around.

Hoping to find local firm that are fitting windows as I drive around, a small business, that I can ask to quote, luckily I am not in any great hurry, none of the present ones are falling out.

He seemed very dodgy, did you get your windows in the end? This is the kind of thing I'm terrible at dealing with.

If you did get your windows and you don't mind me asking: What company did you end up using?

I found this blog through Google actually, was looking for double glazing companies, I need new windows too!

So far the only good looking one I've found is Anglian's HREF="http://www.anglianhome.co.uk/replacement_windows_double_glazing.htm">double glazing as you can see in the link there.

Any suggestions? :)

Cheers

Hi Steve, it's weatherseal-never deal. Their sales technique is disgusting, I think that they saw me as one of those pensioners with lots of money to spend and far too daft to see that it was one big con that they regularly practise against OAPs.

The last offer was £5900, I said thanks but no thanks, they still phone me occasionally.

I am now going for buying the windows direct, lucky enough to have found someone with trade connections, and arranging for a local builder to fit, total price £3500.

Best of luck in your dealings, just be aware of the crap tactics that the sharks use.

You should go and look at http://doubleglazingshop.co.uk for an idea of how these windows really are trade. Or even go to B & Q or Wickes, you should find windows retail are about £350 each and Doors £500 each after all the games and discounts

Thanks for your reply, yep, now obtained from local builders merchant just below that price, biggest problem now finding someone to do the fitting, obviously, and I understand it, they would have liked to make a little profit from the supply so I am prepared to pay a little more for the fitting.
