Help the unemployed.

by joebangles @ 05/03/2008 - 01:16:57

I've been thinking about all those hundreds of thousands that are unemployed, and it's about time that this Government did more to help them.

There can be no satisfaction in sitting at home every day and knowing that you are not earning the money that is sent to you weekly. I can understand how they must feel and I truly believe that we should help.

My suggestion, aimed at giving back that pride that they surely seek, to give them a reason for getting up each day, to give them that satisfaction of knowing that they remain a part of the work force of this country, that they are working for their money, is to get the local authority involved, so,

Each person, after receiving unemployment benefit for 6 months, shall report to the local cleansing department at 8.0 am every day, sign in, and be handed a broom and a barrow, then designated 6 streets that must be kept clean. Returning to the depot at 5.00 pm and sign out. Failure to turn up for work would entail the loss of one fifth of their benefit money on each occasion.

Can I have your support for this proposal?

I'm long-term unemployed and I agree with your suggestion...so long as we are paid minumum wage (my brother is currently on a workfare scheme where he only receives £5 more than his benefit - in effect he's working for £2 an hour).

I've made a similar suggestion several times when I've been signing on at the jobcentre and they told me I'd probably be arrested if I kept on turning up at the council depot.

Hiya lee, the post was a bit tongue in cheek and not an attempt to "have a go" at the unemployed.

I am well aware of the many many that really do wish to be working, but I am also aware of those that are happy to sit back and accept every thing that is going, and those that are working in the black economy whilst signing on, playing the system.

My suspicion is that this Government is satisfied with the present position, to have "their voters" reliant upon the Government and believing that a Labour Government, based on the historical reasons for its formation, will give them a better deal.

To achieve anything, we need more real jobs available, to accept that some of our school children are not suited to extended education, to create "Trade schools" where from the age of 14 can provide the basic training that employers can not afford to provide.

I wasn't sure if the post was tongue in cheek or not, but thought I'd get in there anyway.

Yes, I pretty much agree with your assessment of the situation; apprenticeships at 14 for those who aren't academically inclined...and of course MORE JOBS.

I too think that the government is happy with the situation; the votes of the unemployed (not mine though) have been bought cheaply.

I don't know about you JB but I'm an advocate of the citizen's wage, or social income. Given my own circumstances I'm not able to take a temporary or part-time job, or do any agency work because of the interruption to my benefits and having to go several weeks without any money at all.

I think they either have, or are trying to instigate a 'work for the dole' scheme here in Aussie. I think it's a good idea

That's interesting Dora, it is only one idea, possibly it can be pulled apart and proved to be a bad idea, but some thing has to be done.

Interesting subject Trevor. I too agree that something could be done in return for benefits, although an 8-5, 5-day week would be full-time employment so I'm sure you were joking there, but I do feel something is wrong about folk like lee954's brother working for the equivalent of less than the minimum rate, but saying that, if people on benefits could do a couple of hours per week community service the 'hourly rate' would be impressive, but the benefit to the community from the millions of hours each week would be humongous. Mothers on benefit could take turns to man creches for a couple of hours at a time whilst the other childrens' mums helped shop or clean for elderly and disabled people, people could manage organic food production for state institutions like schools, carehomes, hospitals, also council services and establishments etc etc. Good for the health of the workers, the community and the planet, and the admin could be managed in the same way, or would create full-time paid employment.

There is one other thing though I feel is worth mentioning. Years ago I had 6 years away from employment, keeping house and supporting my husband whilst he worked 12 hour shifts as well as working a vineyard we were developing. Sadly he died, but prior to his death, possibly in preparation, I had started back to work. Although I was happy and fulfilled as his wife, I must say that when I returned to paid employment I felt a self-worth I hadn't realised I'd lost. There is a deep psychological/emotional effect from being part of the group.

Must go now, cheers T, E.X.

Hiya El, you and I should stand as joint Dictators at the next general election, we could sort the country out.

There is deffinitely a sense of satisfaction at the end of a days work, and often a sense of relief, that is missing when you do not work, and as you say, it is easy to get out of the habit of working especially if you can sit back and let the money come to you.

Too many of the unemployed are just not "available for work" due to the other things that they do and I understood that was a requirement.

See ya.
