You know, I thought that I had long forgotten this, but no, today it came back.

This afternoon I was feeding the seagulls, I live 30 miles from the sea, I don't know where the birds come from, but I remember reading that some seagulls never even see the sea.

My first job was in the signal box at Brighton, just outside the station, up high, big sliding windows all around and I do remember that one of my first jobs was to keep them clean.

I enjoyed feeding the gulls as they swooped down and grabbed the pieces of bread that I threw to them, I was young, 14 years old, not that I can use that as an excuse, but one day I discovered that I could use a bit of cotton to tie little paper propellers to the pieces of bread.

Yes, the gulls still grabbed at the bread and flew on with little propellers trailing in their wake.

I tried to make up for it by walking to the shop and buying a full loaf, I stood in the cold and fed it all to them.

It didn't make me feel any better.

They are called urban seagulls, cause all the waste we produce attracts them, they get a better meal here than at sea, thought i'd share that little bit of crap info with u anyway. :)x

I was hoping that you would tell me, but, I googled and found,
Pigeons are altricial birds, i.e., they stay in the nest until they can fly. Pigeon young are hatched at 18 days. They stay in the nest till they are about 30-35 days old. When they fly for the first time, you can often see them in flocks among the adults if you know what to look for. Young pigeons have little if any iridescence on the neck. They still often squeal when they chase their parents or other adult trying to con them into feeding them. Their feathers are a bit duller than the adults and their tail feathers often have a slight point to them - where the down was attached.

Pigeon young almost double their weight each day in the nest and pigeon parents feed them well.

Now we both know, don't tell anyone else. BTW, What is "altricial" ?

Actually trintrin I felt a bit stupid after I posted that, the answer was in the second line of my post that I had copied, but, obviously not read properly.

I bet that you don't get a chance to use the word in conversation tomorrow.

If she is only 16 you don't really want her to fly yet do you Trina, just maybe stretch her wings a little, of course that will change if she is still there when she is in her mid twenty's, that will be altricial.

I did listen to your niece, worked fine for me.

If you only want your friends to read/hear your posts click on friends and it will only appear on friends comp with a wee box around it that says, "for friends only", if you leave it on public your friends will get it as well as the whole public.
